Being an African American teacher of Tibetan Buddhist peace has never been a quest for popularity. Indeed, it has been a burden to bear. How many times can a person walk into a room only to witness people confused by the face and tall stature of someone who is obviously not Tibetan? Answer: As many times as it takes. Why? Because there are simply things His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the legion of Tibetan teachers in the world cannot do. They cannot look into the face of the American black community and say, "I've lived the legacy of black America." So together we must stand, all of us, on the great frontier of what must be done; keepers of the light. Special thanks to Gwen Pierce and all those who make The Chocolate Voice happen. Your work helps our community to continue healing from the injury of slavery. Also, thanks to my late teacher, Khempo Yurmed Tinly who taught me how important it was to teach the Dharma just as I am.
